What Causes Lower Back Pain

People in most professions are effected by lower back pain.  This goes from jobs that you sit in a chair all day, to jobs that requires you to lift things all day.

There are many reasons for back pain, some are not very serious but some are very serious and need to be analysed by a doctor.

There are a few main reasons for back ache, but these reasons can result from many different things.

The first main reason is back pain due to diseases in the back. This can be from 5 main causes:
1. Injuries – these can include fractures of the spine, rupture of discs in the spine, injuries of back muscles, back strain or back joint injury.
2. Imbalances – this can be because of pregnancy, being overweight, problems in the legs or hips changing the way you walk, or the curvature of the spine.
3. Inflammation – this can be causes because of infections, inflammation of the joints, or inflammation of the muscles.
4. Degenerative diseases – for example arthritis, osteoporosis, or degeneration of the discs in the spine.
5. Tumours – these can be tumours on the actual spine or organs around it (eg. kidneys or intestines)

The second main reason is back pain due to gynaecological problems.  For example after childbirth, after an operation, inflammatory disease or more seriously cancer in the pelvic organs.

The third main reason is back pain due to problems in other areas of your body.  A lot of people don’t realise that things like stones, ulcers and inflamation in organs on the front of your body can cause a lot of lower back pain.

There are many tests that doctors use in order to investigate the cause of back pain.  Some of these include blood tests, urine tests, ultrasonic tests (for the abs and pelvis), x-rays (of the lumbar region), MRI’s (of the spine), CT scans (of the abs and pelvis) and examination of rectum and prostate.

There are many medically proved way to treat back pain.  These include removing the cause of back pain (this can be anything from changing your chair to surgery), treating the symptom of back pain, strengthening the back through exercises, and stretching the back through specific stretches and back yoga.

As you cna see there are a lot of different reasons for back pain, and a lot of different ways to treat it.  You need to see a doctor in order to diagnose your back pain so you and your doctor can come up with a solution and treatment that suits your individual back pain.
