Research shows that twenty percent of people who go through surgery for back pain get not much pain relief, and on top of that those left that do get relief can get minimal relief.

Yoga is not cure for back pain, but rather an ongoing treatment and prevention that works for the majority of people. This is because it helps build up strong muscles around the spine, and helps realign the spine itself. Another important point is that if you have back pain you must remain conscious throughout the day to make sure that you don’t do anything to aggravate it. These are some tips:

1. Sleep properly – you should try have a firm bed, this does not necessarily mean your mattress needs to be hard, but rather supportive. You should sleep on a flat pillow for your head, else you will bend your spine. If you get back pain at night or when you wake up, you should also put a pillow under your knees to help your spine reposition itself.

2. Don’t wear high heels. This is bad for your spine and throws it out of balance.

3. Be careful with how you exercise. Anything that you bounce or is high impact is bad for your back. If you want to keep your aerobic exercise swimming or a cross trainer is low impact for your back but still keeps you fit.

4. Ait properly. Try to avoid sitting on something really soft like a couch or cushion, and rather opt for the firmer, more supportive seat. Also make sure not to slouch. If you roll up a towel and put it behind your back when you sit, it will help keep you in proper posture (you can also buy special lumbar rolls to do this).

Yoga is good for the back because it has healing properties. Doing the yoga poses to stretch the muscles around the spine, using a series of safe and gentle positions. Over time the muscles around the spine, the abs, and the buttocks will get stronger, which will help to support the spine.

When you sit down and stand throughout the day, you build up pressure in areas of your back. Doing yoga helps to stimulate these areas, thus relieving the pressure points.

Be careful when you are doing yoga, move slowly and only push each position up to the point where you feel a mild pain, otherwise you could injure yourself and make your back pains worse.

There are only 4 poses: cat pose, cow pose child pose and cobra, which are all well known for increasing flexibility in the back muscles.

Don’t be fooled by the fact she is young a pretty, because these are two of the best yoga moves to stretch out the back (I say two of them because cow/cat are usually done in combination and so are child/cobra).

Almost every one suffers in one time or the other in life with this problem. In today’s stressful life, back pain is not a problem which needs more emphasis.

While at work, the style of work requires continuously sitting posture in the same position for longer hours. After some time, this sitting work style starts showing its effect with back pain. To get rid of this problem instantly, many persons normally resort to crash exercise schedules; this, however, rather than giving beneficial effects, at times worsens the pain, because back injuries are usually delicate and chronic on which many therapeutic solutions do not normally create any effect. Many turn to back yoga for getting relief from these back problems.

There are some hard traditional exercises that can enhance pain levels and aggravate the problem. Usually the physicians suggest some sort of physical activity to those suffering from back problem; these exercises aimed to strengthen the area and reduce the overall pain. “Plant pose” is a back yoga posture. In this posture you have to hold your body in the top of a pushup position. This yoga exercise gives strengths to the muscles of the back and you feel relief from the pain associated with the back tension.

Back yoga lets the practitioner focus on bring mind, body and spirit in harmony and this well rounded nature of the exercise and unified approach is immensely beneficial in back pain treatment. The overall effects of Yoga are not only to treat the body but to the soul mind also.

Another back yoga is Sun Salutation. For doing this yoga, you have to stand upright with feet comfortably positioned and balanced; bring your hands before your chest in a praying position. Then inhale and slowly lift your arms over your head. If not uncomfortable, lean forward and touch the floor with your hands. In beginning it could be difficult to touch floor, so beginner can bend as much he can resting your hands on your knees. This can be done just first half raising the arms overhead.

There is another yoga exercises named corpse. In Corpse yoga, lie flat on your back in a relaxed position, palms down and arms resting at your sides, legs lying naturally with knees turned out slightly; Inhale and exhale for a few seconds and allow any tension to leave the body.

It is necessary that all back yoga exercises should be done with the help of a trained instructor.

Sun salutations are a great way to relieve lower back pain. At the bottom of this post is a diagram of the sun salutations, and if you click on it it will lead to you to a site with detailed instructions on how to do each move properly.

One thing to be careful of is that there are a couple of moves in the standard sun salutations that are not really good for your back, so I suggest you modify them. These are the ones that involve bending your back while keeping your knees straight. That is not very good as it places undue pressure on your sacroiliac joint. Instead just bend your knees for these moves (and if you want to loosen your hamstrings, go do a different stretch).

Sun salutations are really good to alleviate back pain as they stretch your spine. So if you just give 10 minutes each morning to doing these, you will get stronger and looser muscles, and less pain.

Making a back yoga routine can be hard. I go out, find the poses, and then write them all down, and then forget how to do precisely each one I wrote down.

Well not anymore, this great resource has printable cards with someone doing each pose. Now all I do is put them in order, and flip through them as I do my yoga routine (I also blue tack them on the wall so I can just glance at them).

The site is: http://www.yogacards.com/yoga-pose-cards.html

Some tips for when you plan your routine are:

be careful what exercises you choose, some poses such as the tree pose or warrior 3 pose can place stress on your back

start gentlyy – mild versions of poses where you don’t push yourself will still help your back. You don’t want to injure your back more than necessary

It’s also important to pick the right poses. Poses I liek to do for my back are:

cobra pose – good for stretching out the lower back, but you need to be careful with this one, don’t overdo it

tadusana – this is basically standing up straight liek a stiff board. Hard to believe, but it does help your back

locust pose – when you start use your hands to support you

cat pose – more stretching of your back lower back muscles

bridge pose – helps to strengthen your back muscles without aggravating inflammation

sun salutations – this si actually a series of movements for your whole body. Go slowly, at least for the first few of the day

half revolved belly pose – this is you on your back, twisting your knees from side to side. This provides some slight twisting for your spine

Don’t get freaked out some of the scray moves on the cards, just chuch them away and do the simple ones.

This is a a video I found that has a really good 10 minute back yoga routine that will help you eliminate back pain. The moves shown here are very good to loosen up the back as well as the shoulders.

These are all floor exercises, which gives ou the chance to stretch your back with less chance of hurting it. The video has a towel roll used to assist with the moves, but you cna use any towel or a belt (and some of the moves you can do without these).

This routine is pretty good and also Esther explains exactly what you should be doing in great detail. She is a qualified yoga instructor so it is all done with really good technique.

The only thing she doesn’t really do is explain what to do if you are not too flexible. This isn’t too bad though, as most moves can be modified by just going to a point where you are stretching, but are not hurting yourself.

Try this every morning for a week and see if it works for you.
