Does Back Massage Cure Back Pain?

A lot of people suffer from minor back pain, and for many of these people massage can provide relief. Massage improves the circulation of the blood around the body and helps to relax the muscles, so can help to reduce lower back pain. However massage on it’s own will not cure lower back pain. Rather massage is a great method to help ease lower back pain while doing exercises and stretches in order to get long term relief.

The American Massage Therapy Association has released research showing that massage therapy does provide health benefits (Although they may be a bit biased in their research). Some of the benefits are as follows:

a) Better blood movement in the body, which helps in the recovery of muscles that are sore due to physical exertion.

b) Relaxing and loosening of the muscles which improves their ability to move and increases the range of motion.

c) More endorphins in the body, which is actually the best benefit of the massages. These endorphins are the body’s way of making you feel good, which is very helpful for managing back pain.

You should try to make sure that you are careful if you get a massage. You need to ensure that your muscles are relaxing when you get a massage, otherwise they could be getting further inflamed. If your muscles are not getting looser and more relaxed during massages you should stop getting them and see a doctor. It usually takes at least four massages (about 1 massage every 1.5 weeks) in order to get some good results. However you should start feeling some results after only 2 massages. If you don’t then you are probably wasting your money, so you should either try a different massage therapist or try something different.

Remember that if you back pain is sever or has been happening for a long period of time, you should consult a medical professional before getting a massage.
